"Molting Season at the RMRP" Painted Ostrich Egg
This hand painted Ostrich Egg and specialized stand were inspired by the many beautiful feathers molted by the raptors in the care of the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program. Feathers depicted on this egg include: Barn Owl (Tyto alba), Western Screech Owl (Megascops kennicottii), Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), Great-horned Owl (Bubo virginianus), Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) and Merlin (Falco columbarius). While it is illegal to keep feathers from raptors except under permits, as they are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act along with the birds themselves, this artwork is legal, one-of-a-kind, and will last for years to come!

American Kestrel Painted Ostrich Egg
This Ostrich egg features a beautiful portrait of a male American Kestrel. As the smallest falcon in North America, American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) are one of the most common raptors seen, as they are tolerant of humans and often living in urban settings and open country. Male Kestrels are more brightly colored than any of the other raptors; sporting beautiful slate blue wings and crowns against rusty-red body feathers. Unfortunately, American Kestrel populations are declining rapidly in most of the U.S. due to the loss of habitat, nesting cavities, and prey.

Peregrine Falcon on Ostrich Egg
The fastest animal in the world, the Peregrine Falcon (Falcon peregrinus), is featured on this decoupaged Ostrich egg. The largest species of falcon found in Colorado and the second largest of North America, this high-speed racer chases down its prey of other birds and then grabs them right out of the air! Able to stoop (or dive) at speeds up to 250 mph, most prey doesn't stand a chance against a hunting Peregrine. Peregrine Falcons are common in Colorado, and can be found in areas featuring cliffs, a preferred nesting location. This egg's stylized image captures the beauty and color of the jet fighter of the air.
